How to Make Boats Automatic in Minecraft? Lazy Water to the Rescue!
I

n Minecraft, boats add a lot to user experience, making adventures more intense. Yet they always require some input from the player’s side to get moving. Or maybe they did; the recent discovery made by a player named dingyfried shows how to make boats move downstream without any control.

It’s not as easy as it sounds, though. Not on every part of a river can this effect be achieved. It takes a special system of fence gates and other objects that will make the river move slowly, and so will the boat, should it be put down on that water. On the other hand, it does not take any modified version of Minecraft: vanilla Java Edition supports it well.

What can one do with these boats? Well, quite a lot, from taking mobs on board to interacting with redstone machinery. And yes, players van also take a ride on such a boat, getting on and off board when they need. Setting a boat or two (or more) in a world you build changes its rules enough to enable new features. As dingyfried shows, it enables world-builders to make minigames and utilize these abilities in world-building.

As dingyfried shows, aside from transporting mobs and characters, there’s more. Players can use them as triggers for activating redstone machines, use to transport items and materials, and more. It’s all up to your inventiveness, and Minecraft players never lack any.

Even if you are not so much interested in autonomously moving boats, this sudden discovery shows how rich a world Minecraft is becoming. Its developers, as far as we know, did not plan such a feature initially; it’s all become reality thanks to one curious player who was insistent enough to experiment and see their idea work.
