TikTok, the short-form video platform, has been under scrutiny by the US government for its security concerns. On March 18th, CEO Shou Zi Chew testified in front of the US Congress to address these concerns. In his testimony, he sought to assure the US that the company takes user privacy and security seriously.

Chew began his testimony by addressing the primary concern of US security. He stated that TikTok has no ties to the Chinese government and that the company is not subject to Chinese laws. He further assured that all user data is stored securely in the US and Singapore and that no data is transferred to China. 

Chew also addressed the issue of “shadowbanning,” which is when an account is blocked from appearing in search results. He stated that TikTok does not engage in shadowbanning and that the company has strict guidelines in place to ensure the safety of its users.

Chew also discussed the company’s plans for the future. He stated that TikTok is planning to invest $500 million in the US in the next three years and is aiming to create 10,000 jobs. He also announced that the company is launching a new transparency center in the US, which will provide information on how the platform works and how it safeguards user data. 

In addition, Chew discussed the importance of responsible content moderation and stated that the company has a team of moderators dedicated to ensuring that the platform remains a safe place for users. He also highlighted the company’s commitment to transparency and stated that TikTok plans to launch an independent review of its moderation policies and procedures.
