hatsApp is reportedly developing a new capability for its web platform that will enable users to conduct a web search for images that have been shared. Identified as "Search on Web," this tool will facilitate reverse image searches through Google, allowing users to stay within the messaging application. This could be an effective means to combat misinformation and safeguard users against online fraud. Interestingly, testing for this feature began on WhatsApp for Android in November.
WhatsApp Web is preparing to launch a feature that allows for a backward compatibility option image search capability. According to information from a feature tracker, the Search on Web tool is still under development for the instant messaging platform's web version. Currently, the feature is not accessible, so those testing beta versions will not be able to experiment with it. There has been no indication if a corresponding feature is being created for the iOS application.
As shown in a screenshot circulated by the feature tracker, the option will appear once an image is opened in WhatsApp Web. Users can find it by clicking the vertical menu icon located next to options for starring, forwarding, and downloading an image. The “Search on Web” choice is positioned between the Reply Privately and Report selections.
While specifics regarding the function of the reverse image search have not been disclosed, it has been reported that selecting this option will prompt WhatsApp to seek permission from the user to upload the image to Google. Once consent is granted, the search engine will manage the subsequent steps, ensuring WhatsApp does not access any user data. This process will be clearly communicated to users when approval is requested.
Afterward, the user will be directed to view the image on Google’s web client, much like performing a conventional reverse image search. This capability could prove vital in shielding users from scams and false information. When passengers receive images with exaggerated statements or that seem dubious, they will have the option to use the “Search on Web” feature to find similar images online and develop a more precise insight into the circumstances depicted.
